Wondering what possessed me to sit in my garden in New Zealand in 2009 and create life-size metal silhouettes of endemic birds?
I loved creating the birds, that's for sure. But I really enjoyed putting them up in the parks and streets of my neighbourhood (and anywhere else I thought I wouldn't be told off) and seeing the surprise, joy and curiosity they provoked.
When people saw them, they wanted to own their own Metalbirds. My little art project became a side business, then a full time job and finally, with the help of a small team, we took Metalbird out into the world. The artistic gesture of putting a bird on a pole or tree and transforming its environment delights people all over the world.
We love what we produce, we love what you do with it.
I want to thank you for your support and welcome you to this global art project.
- Phil Walters, Creator of Metalbird
Metalbirds is a New Zealand company that was founded in 2009 by Phil Walters, a Wellington-based metal artist. The idea for Metalbirds was born when Phil started making metal bird silhouettes for his own garden. The silhouettes were so popular with his friends and family that he decided to market them.
The first Metalbirds collection was launched in 2012 with three bird designs. Since then, the product range has been significantly expanded to include a variety of New Zealand endemic birds, as well as birds from other parts of the world.
Today, Metalbirds are sold in shops and online around the world. The company is committed to using recycled materials and encouraging environmental sustainability. Metalbirds are also popular with bird lovers and budding birders for their ability to attract wild birds to gardens and outdoor spaces.
